As the seasons shift and you reach for your summer wardrobe, that familiar, stale scent from storage containers can be a disappointing greeting. The musty odor, often accompanied by a faint plastic note, is a common issue for many households. According to Tom Ceconi, president of Heritage Park Laundry Essentials, the cause is rarely singular. "That funny storage smell can come from a number of factors: mold, mildew, damp air, mothballs, body odors, perfumes and detergents, stale air, and more," he explains. This complexity calls for a comprehensive approach to both eliminate the smell and prevent its return.
Ceconi, who leads the detergent company, recommends a three-stage washing process to effectively strip away the odor-causing residue. The first step is to air out the garments. Hanging them on a covered porch or another sheltered area for a few hours allows fresh air to circulate, but direct sunlight should be avoided to prevent fabric fading. After airing, run a regular warm water cycle without detergent, adding a cup of white vinegar instead. This step helps break down the built-up residue that contributes to the musty scent. Follow this with a second cycle using half a cup of baking soda, which further neutralizes odors. Finally, wash with an enzyme detergent, which Ceconi notes "break down stains and odors into their components to remove them more effectively." However, this last step is not suitable for silk, wool, or other protein-based fabrics.
Why Prevention Beats a Cure
Ceconi emphasizes that the best way to avoid the storage smell is to ensure clothes are thoroughly clean and dry before they are put away. "Make sure they are completely dry before storing, and if possible, avoid storage in a musty place like a damp basement," he advises. For those without a dry, climate-controlled storage area, he suggests using compression or vacuum bags and sealed plastic bins. "If the clothing is dry and the storage is airtight, you won't get the musty smell," he adds. The choice of storage container also plays a role. Breathable fabric boxes are a better alternative to plastic bags and bins, as they allow air circulation and reduce moisture buildup. In humid environments where plastic is necessary, the vinegar, baking soda, and enzyme routine should effectively remove any lingering odors.
Beyond washing, Ceconi warns against using fabric softeners and bleach on musty clothes, as these can cause fading, yellowing, and additional residue. Instead, he recommends airing clothes out and using a color-safe bleach when needed.
Smart Storage Habits for Long-Term Freshness
Proper storage techniques can significantly reduce the likelihood of musty smells developing. Adding silica gel packets or other moisture absorbers to storage containers helps prevent mold and mildew. Choosing breathable fabric containers that still protect against bugs and dust is also key. Regularly deep-cleaning your closet and storage containers is important, as these can harbor odors over time. For items stored for extended periods, it's wise to periodically pull them out and wash or air them out to refresh the fabric. Finally, rolling clothes instead of folding them not only protects the material's integrity but also minimizes wrinkles, making the transition back to wearing them smoother.
By following these expert-backed steps, you can ensure that your seasonal clothing emerges from storage smelling fresh and ready to wear, free from the musty reminders of the off-season.
